Fallacy of Pseudo Proof

In the selection from Lee Manovich, there is a troublesome use of the fallacy of pseudo proof. On pp. 69-70, Manovich argues that there is a degradation of quality when copying digitized media. He then proceeds to illustrate this by presenting the facts about lossy compression. The problem is that Manovich's use of lossy compression doesn't apply so much to copies as it does to the original act of digitization. Lossy compression is used when making an initial digital copy (or "capturing"). However, once the copy is made, there is no further compression with additional copies unless the user specifically changes the settings. Any copy made will consist of the same series of ones and zeroes. By presenting information about quality loss, Manovich tries to make it appear that his argument is applicable--however, it is a fallacy of pseduo proof because he misapplies the information to the wrong stage of digitization.
